Its possible to install two different operating systems and dual-boot your Mac.This means youll have both versions of macOS available and you can choose the one that suits you on a day-by-day basis.
Old Versions Of Aim Install Two DifferentCreating a dual boot could be a good solution if you need to run those apps. On older versions of Mac OS X and macOS you would have needed to partition your Mac, while in more modern versions of the Mac operating system you create a volume. Old Versions Of Aim How To Create AWe will assume that you are running a more recent version of macOS so we will focus on creating a second volume, but we do cover how to create a partition here. Remove apps you dont use (heres how to delete apps ), delete any files and folders you dont need, copy your huge photo library onto an external drive, etc.). Its always wise to make sure you back up your Mac before you do anything like this, just in case it all goes horribly wrong. We also have this guide to using Time Machine, which is Apples provided software for backing up. Luckily you dont have to wipe anything if you are just creating a volume. We show you how here: How to run macOS from an external hard drive. Your method will depend on which version of macOS you are already running. If you are running High Sierra on an SSD, or have Mojave or Catalina installed, this process is much easier because your Mac will be using the Apple File System APFS. APFS has a number of advantages a key one being Space Sharing, which makes it possible to share the available space between the different volumes on your disk - so more space can be made available at anytime, rather than being assigned to the volume when it is created, as is the case with a partition. This will make sure you can see the volumes within your disk. We have a more guide to this process, which we recommend you read if you have any problems here: How to partition a Mac hard drive or SSD, or create an APFS volume. To set a size limit click on Size Options and fill in the Reserve (minimum) and Quota (maximum) options. This number can be changed, but its not a simple process so we advise against setting a limit. Old Versions Of Aim Update To MojaveThe Catalina beta was there for us to download (although we did have to update to Mojave beta 10 first). Eventually you will see Ready to install, at which point you will have to stop what you are doing and restart your Mac. Now when you start up you press hold altoption you will be able to choose which Volume you can open, and thereby switch between macOS Catalina and the beta of Big Sur. This time we are looking at a full version of the operating system, rather than a beta. Note: it will have to be a newer version than the one you are running currently - if it isnt then the process will be more complicated and you should read this: How to downgrade to an older version of macOS. This will allow you to choose which volume you want to use, and the version of macOS you want to run.
